Greetings,

I am Dr. Chenita Carter serving as the Crestview faculty Co- Advisor for FAMU-SSHP. I am very excited to assist this organization for the 2023-2024 school year.

1. Why should students consider joining SSHP? Students should consider joining SSHP because it is an opportunity to not only network and build new bridges in the pharmacy, but also to grow as a professional.  There are many different aspects to the profession of pharmacy so being involved in this organization will expose learners to much more than just the traditional pharmacist role.  Being able to meet new people, attend conferences, and advocate for the profession is something that we should all strive to do.

2. Provide a fun fact that you are comfortable sharing publicly. Right now, I am listening to the “Dr. Death” podcast series.  It explores cases of medical malpractice.  It is very interesting to me because as a pharmacist, it is imperative that you put the best interest of the patient first.  When you feel like something doesn’t “look right” or “sound right”, you need to question it.  Be an advocate for the patients and the community in which you are entrusted to serve.

3. How did your involvement in student organizations, such as SSHP, help shape your pharmacy career? Being involved in professional pharmacy organizations allowed me to gain better insight into what pharmacy had to offer.  I knew I wanted to obtain a residency and work in a health-system pharmacy to improve the lives of patients.  I was fortunate to have faculty mentors that assisted me in navigating applying for residencies as well as reviewing my curriculum vitae.   Developing these relationships early on helped mold me as a student and grow into the pharmacist that I am today.
